RTS Guru: Europa Universalis Preview @ Strategy Tour 2012

5 years 4 months ago
“When it comes to strategy series, you’d be hard pressed to find one that is more intricate than Europa Universalis. Its players take one look at Civilization and scoff as if to say, “You know nothing of true challenge.” It is the hardcore game for hardcore strategists, and many of them thought there was nothing more to be improved upon after EU3 and its Rome counterpart were released. But those people were wrong, and Paradox is going to show them why with Europa Universalis IV.” “...we barely touched the surface of all the new features and mechanics during our recent demo, so you can be sure that there’s going to be plenty more to get excited and find out about before then.” “While some fans may have found it inconceivable, it looks like Paradox has found a way to make a cleaner, more approachable Europa Universalis while at the same time not sacrificing the intricate strategy and gameplay that has made this the quintessential strategy series.”

“In Europa Universalis IV, we are going back to our roots and bringing a deep historical flavor to the game. We plan to have many historical events, unique for the countries with the goal that every country will be radically different to play. Naturally we hope this will effectively extend the replayability enormously. We know that historical accuracy has always been one of the things that makes Paradox Development Studio game stand out from other popular strategy games. But the thing with history isn’t only that it lets you recreate your favorite 'what ifs', it also allows for really varied gameplay. If every country is unique, every new gaming session will be unique.”

Rock, Paper, Shotgun: Europa Universalis Article from Gamescom 2012

"If there was no Europa Universalis there almost certainly wouldn’t be a Victoria, a Hearts of Iron or a Crusader Kings. There probably wouldn’t be a Paradox, at least not in its current form. The success of the game, with all its complexities and oddities, led to sequels, expansions and Caesarean spin-offs. Earlier today, the company announced that Europa Universalis IV is in development and we’ll hopefully find out much more at Gamescom next week, but through skilled diplomacy we have managed to secure some early details and screens.
